I began my photography with a complete immersion in the styles and techniques involved in black and white. The possibilities inherent in this process-combined with a deep interest in the mystique of the natural world-greatly intrigued me, and these various influences would become my guides for explorations into the landscape. Black and white was my first love, and remains, in my opinion, the type of photography that I do best.
Around ten years ago, I began carrying a few sheets of color transparency film in my camera pack. On occasion, I would notice a composition that would work in color. After I had shot a few dozen photos in color, I began, on a whim, to submit them to calendar publishers. After I had sold several, the realization came that a living could be made from color. (I had always worked odd jobs, often as a wilderness guide, so as to be able to shoot my black and white.) I had feared that the condtradiction involved in shooting both types of film would put me at an impasse; however, to my surprise, I had no problem seeing images in either way.
Since then, I have come to love color, and greatly enjoy shooting it. I have built up a small color stock business in Moab, and continue to shoot in black and white. I have gradually been getting attention for my black and white, and have a book of landscape photographs entitled "Terra Incognita". The photos contained in this web site are excerpts from this book. I also have a color book of Kansas landscapes entitled "Living Landscapes of Kansas". Both of these are published by the University Press of Kansas.
The color photos from Pennsylvania (in the eastern section) are from a book due out in 1999, to be published by Brown Trout Publishers.
I will have five calendars in 1999 featuring my color photography: these will include Southwest Aerials, Wild and Scenic Kansas, Wild and Scenic Nebraska, Wild and Scenic Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania Places. These are all available through Brown Trout Publishers.
My photography, both black and white and color, is available in limited edition prints of various sizes. All photos are mounted and matted on white 100% rag board.
My love affair with the natural landscape runs on unabated, and continues to grow with every trip I take. The prairies are amazing, with a sere and subtle beauty. The canyons surrounding my home contain an endless treasure trove of images, and the Baja peninsula is incredible. I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to explore and photograph the landscape.
